So I am on my way to work the other day. Dressed professionally and fierce as usual. I see two cop cars in my rear view mirror. They immediately start the dance of tailing me and driving along side to see who was in the car.
Before I can say "Damn it's the Po Po" the lights are on and I am pulling to the side of the road.
So there I am a stereotype on the street.
I have been pulled over by the police as young as 16 years old in every state I have ever lived in, usually with their hands on their gun or guns drawn.
I immediately start my ritual. I roll down the windows, switch the radio to a Gospel station, take off my sunglasses, hands on the steering wheel and struggle to refrain from any Rodney King references.
This may seem a bit paranoid to the mainstream but DWB (driving while Black) is a real phenomenon.
The white female police officer approaches the passenger side. "Do you know why I stopped you?"
I refrain from responding "You want my opinion on who will replace Simon on American Idol" no I do not but the suspense is killing me I sweetly respond smiling.
You have an expired tag. We are going to have to take it, the officer responds.
I'm sorry you are going to physically take my tag? And before I could get a response another Black female officer approaches with the screws and plate, she must be the muscle.
She writes me a ticket and I sit there wondering where are you taking my tag? Will my tag be in a holding pen with other more dangerous tags?
Will my tag need a court appointed attorney or will it be able to represent itself?
Are there visiting hours?
Can I speak with my tag through a glass window as long as we are supervised?
Will my tag become the prison bitch for some big SUV Tahoe tag?
Officer: Keep this paperwork in case you get stopped again.
I think, I am a Black man now riding around in a vehicle with no tags of course I will be stopped again you heifer!
The officer retreats leaving me angry, vulnerable and tag less on the side of the road.
