Jonathan Ferrell, me and the Geico pig.
In my latest Creative Loafing column, I just had to write about the senseless shooting of this local young brother Jonathan Ferrell who was gunned down 10 times by an officer for seeking help after he was in a violent car accident.
This unfortunate killing is just a sad pattern of violence against men of color. When folks think that racial profiling does not occur you just have to look at the disgraceful shooting of this young former athlete and college student.
Jonathan Ferrell was a former college athlete who moved to Charlotte to be closer to his fiance. He was injured and unarmed when he was shot and should have been treated like any other citizen in need but was killed because of the persona of black men being violent, predators and criminals.
I share my own personal history and local incident of being profiled and how angry and disenfranchised such an experience will leave you.
