Hey guys I wanted to share my latest column with Creative Loafing. A NC school is attempting to ban "The Color Purple" from an AP english class!
It is just amazing that such a thing is even being considered but apparently this has happened before in NC when they successfully banned for a short period of time, Ralph Ellison's "Invisible Man."

I share a casual observation of a senior citizen at the grocery store and how we need to make sure that through revitalization and change for progress that we do not forget or make a place for those that have paved the way for the rest of the community.
I speak about how one senior community, The Gables, is making sure that there is a place for low, middle income folks and former residents to remain a part of the community many have called home for years.
In my latest Creative Loafing column, I just had to write about the senseless shooting of this local young brother Jonathan Ferrell who was gunned down 10 times by an officer for seeking help after he was in a violent car accident.
This unfortunate killing is just a sad pattern of violence against men of color. When folks think that racial profiling does not occur you just have to look at the disgraceful shooting of this young former athlete and college student.
Jonathan Ferrell was a former college athlete who moved to Charlotte to be closer to his fiance. He was injured and unarmed when he was shot and should have been treated like any other citizen in need but was killed because of the persona of black men being violent, predators and criminals.
I share my own personal history and local incident of being profiled and how angry and disenfranchised such an experience will leave you.

I am sure many of you have been in a similar situation where you are not quite sure how to respond because you are not sure what is motivating the person that has treated you poorly.
I wanted to honor one of my childhood heroes the martial arts, bad brother, Jim Kelly who passed recently.
Jim
Kelly was a tall, handsome, afro side-burn wearing, bad brother that
legitimized being a martial arts star for so many young kids especially
black boys.
He has a legion of fans and his appeal crosses race,
class, gender, age and culture. He will be missed for his amazing
contribution!

I talk about some companies bright idea of "ghetto tours" but bring it close to home in how it might be received in Charlotte or in a city near you...lol.
