I have to give a shout out to my writing buddy at Q City Metro, Ms. Barbara McWhite for covering this story so well.
Just when I thought the weird world of child pageants, as celebrated on TLC’s “Toddlers and Tiaras”, could not get any more bizarre- wait for it- “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.”
The show “Toddlers and Tiaras” has managed to mainstream: stage moms, hair pieces, girl woman personas, flippers (fake teeth) and the phrase “sparkle.”
The new show “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” starring real life pageant girl Alan Thompson has all the regular signifiers of pageant culture plus one interesting character trait Alan has included as part of her persona. She is a ghetto fabulous, albeit stereotypical black woman, trapped in a little country white girls body.
You ever wonder where guest of Maury and The Steve Wilko
show are from? You know the type I am
talking about some ghetto fabulous white girl with three black baby daddies
descending upon the stage yelling to the audience “You don’t know me!” Yes not only do we know you because we see
someone like you on here everyday but Honey Boo Boo will give you and idea of
how these women are engineered.
Although Alan is the star she shares the show with her quirky redneck family including mother June, dad “Sugar Bear” and her two sisters which Alan describes as (“craziest” and “pregnantest”).
Honey Boo Boo is kind of like a miniature Susan Sugarbaker from "Designing Women." They both have big hair, love pageants, tiaras and both have pet pigs.
Ada Calhoun a Los Angeles Times contributor shared with TODAY regarding the family that “I think a lot of people relate to them. I mean, they're a poor family, but they're having a great time. (But) I think that a lot of people are making fun of them, saying June is not the best mother in the world. And they're sort of enjoying feeling superior, which I don't think is so healthy."
I saw a promo for this show and thought wow. You feel kind of wrong watching it like getting smacked when you were younger for laughing at one of your challenged relatives.
Check out the video below and come to your own conclusions about Ms. Boo Boo….smile.
