We can all remember someone in our childhood that was the neighborhood or school bully. I know I had my own list of bullies groiwing up. One parent has taken a very unusual approach in supporting and protecting his son from bullies.
A German dad, Nils Pickert, has a son that enjoys wearing dresses which the Dad is comfortable with so to show his support he started wearing a skirt.
Pickert became a role model for parents around the world when the picture of he and his son wearing red dresses went viral on the internet.(Picture courtesy of Emma Magazine)
Dang my Dad just showed me how to protect my face during a fight....lol.
Pickert's son really became the source of scrutiny when they moved from West Berlin to small German town.
Pickert worried about what all the negative attenion would do to his son's self-esteem. "I didn't want to talk my son into not wearing dresses and skirts," Pickert explained. "He didn't make friends doing that in Berlin… so after a lot of contemplation I had only one option left: To broaden my shoulders for my little buddy and dress in a skirt myself."
Pickert has been hailed as "Father of the Year" by Gawker and many other parenting blogs.
The more important achievement is how well adjusted his son now is due their ritual of walking hand-in-hand sporting their red dresses on the streets of their small town. A ritual that has now shown a significant decrease in the negative scrutiny his son now receives.
For the few that still have something to say to his son he simply replies: "You don't dare to wear skirts and dresses because your dads don't dare to either."
Wow. My parents would just tell me to ignore a bully or if I could catch them off guard lay them out in front of a crowd and they would back off.....lol.
Pickert's son could be the next Rupaul or this could just be a phase and he grows up to be a straight jock but regardless how he turns out he has one very cool Dad that has his back.
Pickert is truly an inspirational Dad.
