A wedding video between two gay men, one of which happens to be a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., has gone viral with a lot of controversy. Why?
The controversy of legalizing gay marriage aside you would think as a society we should be very accustomed to seeing gay unions at this point.
It seems for some the biggest issue with this particular wedding video is that we have two African-American men getting hitched and to add insult to injury there seems to be a reference to a historical predominantly African-American male fraternity.
So we not only have a wedding that upsets the values of staunch Christians we also have a ceremony that hits at the heart of one of the last "protected" environments of hyper-masculinity.
I think the only way you could top this would be a ceremony between two African-American NFL stars getting hitched during the Super Bowl while Cher sings at half-time to really take folks over the edge.
This story first caught my attention a few days ago when I heard them talking about it on "The Tom Joyner Morning Show." The host of the show, to their credit, made jokes like they do about any other story in the headlines.
This morning one of the men from the couple, Nathanael Gay (yes that is his real name..smile) who is a member of the fraternity Kappa Alpha Psi appeared on the TJMS. He was given an opportunity to explain why he and his partner felt compelled to upload their video to You Tube.
He shared that they uploaded the video like any other couple, so that they could share their special day with their friends and family. Nathanael also shared on the show and I agree with his statement, that it is 2012 and folks should really be moving way past this point.
Hello! Like it or not there are gay people and some of them want the right to celebrate their unions just like any other couple.
Really the only way to combat homophobia and bigotry is for more folks to stand up and walk in their own truth!
I also know that we do not like to admit such things but there are gay folks in every one of the historically Greek African-American sororities and fraternities.
How all ya'll doing?
My hat is off to this couple for walking in their truth and expressing their love for one another in such a public and positive way. I wish them much happiness in their new life together!
GOTTA LOVE, LOVE!
