Apparently Idris Elba was one of the many Hollywood Black actors that wanted the role of Django. Tarantino orginally wanted Will Smith to play the role but Smith turned him down. Way to go Will!
In an interview with UK Sun Tarantino explains his reasons for not wanting Elba for the role:
“Yeah, Idris is British and this is an American story. I think a problem with a lot of movies that deal with this issue is they cast British actors to play the Southerners and it goes a long way to distancing the movie. They put on their gargoyle masks and they do their phoney accents and you are not telling an American story any more. They are just making hay of it, whether it be James Mason in Mandingo or Michael Caine in Hurry Sundown, they get British actors to do this.”
I am down for any reason to see Elba shirtless but I am glad he was not chosen for the role.
I have written about my take on the film
Elba was not the only actor who was chasing the role of Django apparently Chris Tucker and Terrence Howard were also coveting the role.
Well as you know the role eventually went to Jamie Foxx. But the rest of the group needs to send Tarantino a muffin basket for turning them down. They will look back on their careers and be thankful that they were not part of the film.
We've had our discussion about the film, but we have to consider the real here. Is Will Smith really going to consider turing down a critically accliamed film like Django to do the next M. Night Shalyman flop Another Earth with his son? Let's remember this is the same actor who turned down The Matrix to do Wild Wild West. He is not exactly shooting for the untarnished career path.
