Professional sports which is one of the last sacred environments of hyper masculinity, so it is no surprise that issues of sexuality would still be taboo.
One NFL free agent Kerry Rhodes has been fighting rumors of his being gay due to photos that have been circulating by www.mediatakeout.com.
Rhodes released a statement to TMZ, "“Photos have been circulating of my former assistant and I that have caused some rumors regarding my sεxuality, and I wanted to address the situation. I am not gay.” Rhodes went on to explain the origin of the photographs, “The shots were taken during a past vacation in a casual environment with my entire business team.”
Yes I have many photos of my boss carrying me during one of our management retreats.....lol.
Rhodes who is fine as hell denies being gay, however, he does support other gay athletes in their struggle for acceptance. “I know a lot of people are recently talking about athletes struggling to come out to their fans right now, and I support them, as well as wish those individuals comfort.”
The topic of gay athletes is an ongoing issue and one that could in the near future potentially turn into a much larger platform of exploration.
Ex-Baltimore Ravens and gay rights supporter Brendon Ayanbadejo is expanding the dialogue in a big way. He announced that four NFL players are considering outing their sεxuality soon. “We’re in talks with a handful of players who are considering it. There are up to four players being talked to right now, and they’re trying to be organized so they can come out on the same day together. It would make a major splash and take the pressure off one guy. It would be a monumental day if a handful or a few guys come out.”
Can you imagine if four hunky NFL players come out on the same day. Such an event would be a major advancement in LGBT rights and identity. Four NFL players coming out on the same day would definitely force professional sports environments to deal with issues of sexuality among their players in a major way.
This will give the gay anthem "It's Raining Men" a whole new meaning....lol
I cannot wait for the gay NFL calendar....smile.
