So I have to give a shout out to my little play brother Jova for turning me onto this show. "Chozen" is about a gay white rapper fresh out of prison trying to make it big as a rap artist.
The main character,Chozen, uses his "man on man" experiences while in prison to shape his artistry. His lyrics challenge stereotypes, hyper-masculine personas and misogyny that is synonymous with the world of Hip Hop.
SNL's Bobby Moynihan is set to star in the series as Chozen, the lead character of the show with his nemesis Phantasm being voiced by legendary rapper, Method Man.
The show has come under scrutiny by some critics. Method Man responded to critics by saying, "It's a fuckin cartoon. These same hatin ass nigs cheer for Omar from the wire tho," Meth said in a Twitter post. "So fuck off wit all that it hurts hip-hop bs only thing hurtin hip hop is u self loathing over opinionated wannabe thug ass niggas..smh."
I must agree, if folks want to hate on an animated series, which by the way is funny as hell, they should hate on something much more damaging like a decade of the BET awards.
Although the show challenges the hyper-machismo persona of many male rappers it still shies away from the reality of possible Black gay rap artist. But real talk, we have to know that some folks are on the DL when it comes to their sexuality and interest.
The show at least creates an opportunity to challenge conventional norms in a very entertaining manner. The characters in the show are all hilarious.
"Chozen" is like a gay, white, rapper version of "The Boondocks." LOL
The last episode I saw was when Chozen was attending a campus LGBT meeting and gave props to a fierce transgender student and in his words "Respect for you mad tuck skills."
